Decolonizing Echos

Das Projekt Decolonizing Echos folgt auf das Projekt Bismarck Dekolonial, das die mexikanische Choreografin und Kuratorin Yolanda Gutiérrez im Sommer 2021 initiiert hat. Sie hatte Künstler*innen verschiedener Disziplinen aus ehemaligen europäischen Kolonien in Afrika nach Hamburg eingeladen, sich kritisch mit dem Bismarck Denkmal auseinanderzusetzen. Im Sommer 2021 lud die mexikanisch deutsche Choreografin und Kuratorin Yolanda Gutiérrez Künstler*innen unterschiedlicher Sparten aus ehemaligen europäischen Kolonien auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent nach Hamburg ein, um sich kritisch mit dem Bismarck-Denkmal auseinanderzusetzen. Ebenfalls Teil des Projektes war der mexikanischen Multimedia Künstler Fabian Villasana aka Dr. Calavera. Das Projekt Bismarck Dekolonial wurde zum Sommerfestival auf Kampnagel eingeladen und war ebenso Teil des Hamburger Kultursommers. Der ruandische Illustrator Dolph Banza und Fabian Villasana entwickelten dafür in einem Online-Dialog eine Reihe von Illustrationen als künstlerische Stimme zur aktuellen Debatte um das Bismarck-Denkmal in Hamburg.

Hier schliesst das Projekt Decolonize Echos an. Am Anfang stand weiterhin die kritische Betrachtung des Bismarck-Denkmals in Hamburg. Fabian Villasana übernahm die künstlerische Leitung und Umsetzung des Video Mappings und Projektion auf das Denkmal. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Künstlerin Tennin wurde am 10. September 2022 eine Musikintervention am Bismarck-Denkmal im öffentlichen Raum veranstaltet. Die Projektion bespielte die weithin sichtbare Statue an prominenter Stelle vom Kopf bis zum Sockel der Südwest-Seite.

The project Decolonizing Echos follows up on a project called Bismarck Dekolonial, which was initiated in summer 2021 by the Mexican-German choreographer and curator Yolanda Gutiérrez. She invited artists from different disciplines from former European colonies on the African continent to Hamburg to critically examine the Bismarck monument.

Also part of the project was the Mexican multimedia artist Fabian Villasana aka Dr. Calavera who invited the Rwandan illustrator Dolph Banza and artist and singer Tennin to develop a series of illustrations in relation to a sound intervention as an ongoing dialogue and an artistic voice to the current debate revolving around the controversial standing of the Bismarck monument in Hamburg. The public is invited to take part in a series of events with discussions, a guided tour, video mapping

on the monument and sound intervention in public space. The videos will be projected on the statue, visible from afar in a prominent position from the head to the base. The interventions will be accompanied by a guided tour, a workshop, and a panel discussion with various international speakers. The project aims to give a platform to discuss cultures of memory and possible artistic interventions on monuments and public spaces with a questionable history.
